Petersburg / Alexandria Loop

Directions : Beginning at Ellis Hall, Head towards 19th St. / Sherwood Hall. Continue up 19th street and make a right onto Moore St. Follow the bend by the print shop onto Cold Spring Rd. Follow cold spring road up to Petersburg Pike (It is a left turn at the top of a hill a little past Westminster Woods). Climb the Petersburg Pike Hill to the Game lands. Follow the rolling hills of the roads towards Chicote hollow Rd but continue left onto Petersburg Pike Rd. Take this into the Town of Petersburg and turn left at the bottom of the hill. Follow Route 305. After the bridge over the railroad tracks, make a left (almost a U-turn) onto River Rd. Follow River Rd. to Alexandria Pike and turn left (To the right will be the bridge to Alexandria). Climb Alexandria Pike and then descend the other side past the prison. Continue towards Rt 26 and turn left. Turn left at the bridge towards Huntingdon and head back to campus.
Alternate routes : Instead of turning onto River Rd., Follow 305 to the town of Alexandria and then turn left onto Alexandria pike (305 will turn right into town, turn left instead of right).
Alternate Route : Instead of following Petersburg Pike all the way, go towards Chicote Hollow Rd and turn left. Follow the descent into the Village of Ribot. Turn Left on 305 and continue into Petersburg.
Alternate Route: Same as last alternate route, but get to chicote hollow road via Cold Spring Rd.

Route Description / landmarks: There are two sizable climbs with one false peak. The descents are a great opportunity to practice your turning. This is a nice, quiet ride through rural scenery.

Chicote down to McConellstown

Follow that all the way to Rt 26. Ride along 26 for a few blocks and then bear right onto Lang Ln. (usually by a school bus). Follow that to Station Rd and make a right. Follow Station Rd Back to fairgrounds Rd. Take Fairgrounds Rd. back to town.

Chicote Loop
Directions:
Directions: Beginning at Ellis Hall, Head towards 19th St. / Sherwood Hall. Continue up 19th street and make a right onto Moore St. Follow the bend by the print shop onto Cold Spring Rd. Follow cold spring road up to Petersburg Pike (It is a left turn at the top of a hill a little past Westminster Woods). Climb the Petersburg Pike Hill to the Game lands. Follow the rolling hills of the roads to the access road to chicote Hollow Road (There will be a spot where the main road turns left, but a different road goes straight. That is the way you want to go. Continue straight, not left). Follow this road along the farms and pass by “Cowncil Rock” (It’s a series of boulders on a hill on the left where the cattle gather when not in the barn.) Eventually you will end up at Chicote hollow Road (On your left will be a farm with an emu and on your right a rundown house with free-range chickens). Turn right and climb up the hill to the top. Just past the top there is a gravel lot and then what looks like a side road. Turn right onto this road (it is still Chicote hollow road). Continue down this curvy hill. One cautious point is that the road will turn 90 degrees right then left then right. After this is a very steep section followed by a sharp blind right turn–Watch your speed. Continue down the road until you arrive at Cold Spring Rd. Turn Right and follow Cold Spring Road back to campus.

Car safety: Along Cold Spring Rd, there is no shoulder, so you must assert your position on the road. There are plenty of straight sections for cars to safely pass you.
Route Description / landmarks: There are not too many large hills. Some distance goals to reach for include making it to the Power Lines and making it to the end.
Training Tips: Try to push up and over the hills and then relax on the downhills. Work up to pedaling hard on both the uphill and downhill.

Cold Spring / SR 26
Directions:
Directions : Beginning at Ellis Hall, Head towards 19th St. / Sherwood Hall. Continue up 19th street and make a right onto Moore St. Follow the bend by the print shop onto Cold Spring Rd. Follow cold spring road until you get to Route 26. Turn right onto Route 26. Follow Route 26 back into town. Turn right onto Mifflin St. Follow Mifflin St. to 17th St. Turn onto 17th St. and you will enter campus.
Car safety: Along Cold Spring Rd, there is no shoulder, so you must assert your position on the road. There are plenty of straight sections for cars to safely pass you. SR26 has a large shoulder for most of it but be sure to look ahead for debris. The speed limit is 55 for parts of this, so this can be good to help feel more confident with cars.
Route Description / landmarks: There are not too many large hills. The flats on 26 can be very windy and draining but push through. The power lines on Cold Spring and 26 are both about halfway down each of those roads.
Training Tips: Try to push up and over the hills and then relax on the downhills. Work up to pedaling hard on uphill and downhills.

Corbin Road Routes
Directions:
Directions : Beginning at Ellis Hall, Head towards 17th St. / Football field. Continue up 17th street and make a left onto Washington St. Follow Washington St. all the way to 4th street. Turn right onto 4th street and continue toward Route 22. Turn Left into the Shopping Center and then make your way to the traffic light. Turn Left onto Route 22 and take the first right (it's a fork right after a gravel lot. Continue along Snyder's Run Rd and then make the left at the intersection towards Henderson Hollow Rd. At the next intersection, again continue straight onto River Rd instead of right. Follow this road all the way to the Corbin Island Bridge. It will be a single lane bridge on the left side of the road. Cross the bridge and go up the gravel hill that is straight ahead. Follow this all the way to the top. From here there are a few options:

On route 22, I recommend always riding on the side away from the giant, so you only cross it at the traffic light. Be cautious on the gravel as it is a single lane road open to cars.
Route Description / landmarks: The route is part road and part gravel. Be sure to keep good control on the small gravel descents and maintain speed on the ascents. The Corbin Rd. climb is a large climb but is quite physically rewarding. The descent on 829 is long and smooth.
Training Tips: Try to do the hill without stopping. Focus on your nutrition. Work on using your body as a suspension on the gravel. Focus on preventing your tires from slipping by controlling your weight distribution.
Field Station Out and Back

Directions : Leaving school, head downtown along Washington St. and make a right to go under the 8th street bridge. Continue straight along fairgrounds Rd. until you get to Station Rd. You can mostly follow the signs for fisherman's Journey. Head down station Rd. to Turkey Farm Rd to Seven Points Rd. Turn right on to Seven Points and cross 26 onto Racetrack Rd. Turn Left onto Redstone Ridge Rd. Take that to the end and turn left and then turn right onto 26. Take 26 to Fouses Crossing Rd (On the left). From here turn right onto James Creek Rd and take that to the field station entrance (on the left).

Huntingdon / PA Furnace

Directions : Head as if you were going to Petersburg. Go through the town of Petersburg and turn left onto diamond valley Rd. (towards Camp blue diamond). Follow that into the state forest. From here there a two Options:
Option 1: Continue straight and follow turns to go from Tram Rd to Colerain Rd. Take Colerain Rd over the mountain and turn right onto Route 45. From here follow below directions.
Option 2: Continue along Diamond Valley Rd to Leading Ridge Rd. back onto Diamond Valley to Furnace Rd. Follow furnace Rd. to tram Rd. and then a quick left then right onto Pennsylvania Furnace Rd. Follow that over the ridge to 45 and turn left.
Cont. Directions : Follow 45 to 350 / Warriors Mark Path Rd. Take that to Old Mill Rd / Huntingdon Furnace Rd. Follow that back to 45 and turn right to head south. From here you have two options:
Option 1: Head back via Colerain Rd (see option 1 above).
Option 2: Follow 45 South all the way to 453. (One note is that you will pass under a railroad bridge after a left turn that may not be fully apparent). Descend 453 to 22. Ride along 22 for a quarter mile to the Entrance to the rails to trails. (There is a sign for PA Bike Route S?). Turn left onto the trail to end up eventually on Alexandria pike. Turn right out of the lot and head back to Huntingdon.
Shortcut: Instead of Traveling along 45 to Huntingdon furnace you can just go south along 45.
Vistas : There are multiple vistas along this route. 3 of them are along the path (2 on Colerain Rd., 1 on PA furnace). The 4th vista is off a side trail along Colerain Rd (after the top of the hill). There will be a side trail marked with Yellow Blazes. There is a small 1-2 car lot on the left side of the road. The trail is on the right with a couple of boulders to mark it.
Car safety: Along this route, there is no shoulder, so you must assert your position on the road. There are plenty of straight sections for cars to safely pass you but be cautious if you are stopped or slowly moving on curves – STAY VISIBLE. Be careful of cars traveling along the forest roads.
Route Description / landmarks: This is a very challenging route with a lot of elevation gain and limited water or public access. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE WATER, FOOD, FIRST AID, AND REPAIR KITS. It is very possible to do the entire forest section without seeing another person and service is very spotty. Additionally, PA Furnace Rd is closed to motor vehicles and is very rough terrain. I recommend at least 50+oz of water with at least half being a hydration mix. That being said, this is a very fun ride with some amazing views (especially during the fall).

Peterburg Pike Powerline Ride
Directions:
Directions : Beginning at Ellis Hall, Head towards 19th St. / Sherwood Hall. Continue up 19th street and make a right onto Moore St. Follow the bend by the print shop onto Cold Spring Rd. Follow cold spring road up to Petersburg Pike (It is a left turn at the top of a hill a little past Westminster Woods). Climb the Petersburg Pike Hill to the Game lands. Follow the rolling hills of the roads to the Powerlines (at the bottom of a small downhill). From here you can turn around in the gravel lot.
Car safety: Along Cold Spring Rd and Petersburg pike, there is no shoulder, so you must assert your position on the road. There are plenty of straight sections for cars to safely pass you but be cautious if you are stopped or slowly moving on curves – STAY VISIBLE. Piney Ridge Road Out and Back
Directions:
Directions : Leave campus towards downtown. Head down Washington St. to 8th street and turn right to go under the bridge. Continue under the bridge along fairgrounds Rd. Just past the turnoff to route 22, turn left onto piney ridge Rd. There is a sign for Lake Raystown Family Camping pointing towards it. Take the hill up and continue along the ridge line. Turn around before the descent to seven points road. (Usually by orchards Rd., There is a sign for the municipal buildings).
Optional Sight : There is a lake access at the bottom of orchard Rd. It is down a small hill that turns into a very bad trail.

There are plenty of straight sections for cars to safely pass you but be cautious if you are stopped or slowly moving on curves – STAY VISIBLE. On the ridge, winds can be strong, and it can be relatively busy (especially near school dismissal). If traveling in reverse along the route, use caution to not fall down the drop off.

Raystown Region Century

Directions : This is a long route with quite a few turns. The main idea is heading south along side roads/26(as if going to field station). Once in Saxton Work back north to 994 to get to a series of back roads to head back north onto 829. From there work north along back roads to 26 and then head back south to Chicote hollow Rd. to head to Petersburg and then back to campus via Alexandria Pike.
Car safety: Along this route, there is no shoulder, so you must assert your position on the road. There are plenty of straight sections for cars to safely pass you but be cautious if you are stopped or slowly moving on curves – STAY VISIBLE.
Route Description / landmarks: This is a challenging route. I recommend planning to be on the bike for at least 8 hours with breaks and all included. There is a 5-mile section currently that is more of a hiking trail than biking. This will slow you down significantly. I recommend stocking up on water in Saxton (the dollar general has cheap water). I also recommend having batteries and possibly even printed maps. Give someone you trust a copy of the map so you can call them if you are lost or stuck. Lights are important in case you get stuck in the dark. Also be sure to have enough food. About 100-200 calories an hour should be eaten.
Training Tips: Try to do the hills without stopping. Focus on your nutrition. Don't go too fast the first time. You wouldn't want to burnout before the finish.
Ridenour Outlook

Spelunker's Tour

Directions : Leaving school, head downtown along Washington St. and make a right to go under the 8th street bridge. Continue straight along fairgrounds Rd. until you get to Station Rd. You can mostly follow the signs for Spelunker's Tour. A rough overview is that you will from here head up through Petersburg all the way north towards McAlevy's Fort. You will then head south back towards town along 26.

Stone Creek Ridge Road
Directions:
Directions : Beginning at Ellis Hall, Head towards 17th St. / Football field. Continue up 17th street and make a left onto Washington St. Follow Washington St. all the way to the end of town / Route 26. Turn Left and then Right onto Water Works Ave. Turn right at the stop sign onto Locust Ave. At Route 26, turn Left. Continue past the bridge over Standing Stone Creek and make a left onto Stone Creek Ridge Rd. (There will be a sign saying Isett Heritage Museum). This begins the ~1 mile climb. There is a shoulder for the straight section of the climb, but it tends to be full of debris, so use caution. Once at the top, continue along the road until it leaves the ridge. From here there are two choices:
Choice 1: Continue along the curves until you encounter Bark Ridge Rd and turn right. (It is at the power lines, the 2nd time you encounter them). Continue along Bark Ridge back to Stone Creek Ridge. There is a section of gravel, so use caution. Once on Stone Creek descend the hill. Be careful when descending, the right side of the lane has been torn up and repaved, so it is not smooth. Choice 2 : Continue until you encounter Gorsuch Rd and turn left. It should not be that far. If you reach Bark Ridge, you have gone too far. Continue down Gorsuch Rd until you reach Route 26. Directions:Directions: Beginning at Ellis Hall, Head towards 19th St. / Sherwood Hall. Continue up 19th street and make a right onto Moore St. Follow the bend by the print shop onto Cold Spring Rd. Follow cold spring road up to Petersburg Pike (It is a left turn at the top of a hill a little past Westminster Woods). Climb the Petersburg Pike Hill to the Game lands. Follow the rolling hills of the roads to the access road to chicote Hollow Road (There will be a spot where the main road turns left, but a different road goes straight. That is the way you want to go. Continue straight, not left). Follow this road along the farms and pass by “Cowncil Rock” (It’s a series of boulders on a hill on the left where the cattle gather when not in the barn.) Eventually you will end up at Chicote hollow Road (On your left will be a farm with an emu and on your right a rundown house with free-range chickens). Turn right and climb up the hill to the top. Just past the top there is a gravel lot and then what looks like a side road. Turn right onto this road (it is still Chicote hollow road). Continue down this curvy hill. One cautious point is that the road will turn 90 degrees right then left then right. After this is a very steep section followed by a sharp blind right turn–Watch your speed. Continue down the road until you arrive at Cold Spring Rd. Turn Right and follow Cold Spring Road back to campus. There are plenty of straight sections for cars to safely pass you but be cautious if you are stopped or slowly moving on curves – STAY VISIBLE. Directions:Directions : Beginning at Ellis Hall, Head towards 17th St. / Football field. Continue up 17th street and make a left onto Washington St. Follow Washington St. all the way to 4th street. Turn right onto 4th street and continue toward Route 22. Turn Left into the Shopping Center and then make your way to the traffic light. Turn Left onto Route 22 and take the first right (it's a fork right after a gravel lot. Continue along Snyder's Run Rd and then make the left at the intersection towards Henderson Hollow Rd. At the next intersection, again continue straight onto River Rd instead of right. Follow this road all the way to the Corbin Island Bridge. It will be a single lane bridge on the left side of the road. Cross the bridge and go up the gravel hill that is straight ahead. Follow this all the way to the top. From there you will go to Big Valley Pike / Rt 685. Then, fork left onto SR 1005. Eventually turn left onto Frain Rd. Continue straight along fairgrounds Rd. until you get to Station Rd. You can mostly follow the signs for fisherman's Journey. Head down station Rd. to Turkey Farm Rd to Seven Points Rd. Turn right on to Seven Points and cross 26 onto Racetrack Rd. Turn Left onto Redstone Ridge Rd. Take that to the end and turn left and then turn right onto 26. Take 26 to Fouses Crossing Rd (On the left). From here turn right onto James Creek Rd and take that to the field station entrance (on the left). Go through the town of Petersburg and turn left onto diamond valley Rd. (towards Camp blue diamond). Follow that into the state forest. From here there a two Options: Option 1: Continue straight and follow turns to go from Tram Rd to Colerain Rd. Take Colerain Rd over the mountain and turn right onto Route 45. From here follow below directions. Option 2: Continue along Diamond Valley Rd to Leading Ridge Rd. back onto Diamond Valley to Furnace Rd. Follow furnace Rd. to tram Rd. and then a quick left then right onto Pennsylvania Furnace Rd. Follow that over the ridge to 45 and turn left. Cont. Directions : Follow 45 to 350 / Warriors Mark Path Rd. Take that to Old Mill Rd / Huntingdon Furnace Rd. Follow that back to 45 and turn right to head south. From here you have two options: Option 1: Head back via Colerain Rd (see option 1 above). Option 2: Follow 45 South all the way to 453. (One note is that you will pass under a railroad bridge after a left turn that may not be fully apparent). Descend 453 to 22. Ride along 22 for a quarter mile to the Entrance to the rails to trails. (There is a sign for PA Bike Route S?). Turn left onto the trail to end up eventually on Alexandria pike. Turn right out of the lot and head back to Huntingdon. Shortcut: Instead of Traveling along 45 to Huntingdon furnace you can just go south along 45. Vistas : There are multiple vistas along this route. 3 of them are along the path (2 on Colerain Rd., 1 on PA furnace). The 4th vista is off a side trail along Colerain Rd (after the top of the hill). There will be a side trail marked with Yellow Blazes. There is a small 1-2 car lot on the left side of the road. The trail is on the right with a couple of boulders to mark it. Car safety: Along this route, there is no shoulder, so you must assert your position on the road. There are plenty of straight sections for cars to safely pass you but be cautious if you are stopped or slowly moving on curves – STAY VISIBLE. Be careful of cars traveling along the forest roads. Route Description / landmarks: This is a very challenging route with a lot of elevation gain and limited water or public access. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE WATER, FOOD, FIRST AID, AND REPAIR KITS. It is very possible to do the entire forest section without seeing another person and service is very spotty. Additionally, PA Furnace Rd is closed to motor vehicles and is very rough terrain. I recommend at least 50+oz of water with at least half being a hydration mix. That being said, this is a very fun ride with some amazing views (especially during the fall). Turn around before the descent to seven points road. (Usually by orchards Rd., There is a sign for the municipal buildings). Optional Sight : There is a lake access at the bottom of orchard Rd. It is down a small hill that turns into a very bad trail. Car safety: Along this route, there is no shoulder, so you must assert your position on the road. The main idea is heading south along side roads/26(as if going to field station). Once in Saxton Work back north to 994 to get to a series of back roads to head back north onto 829. From there work north along back roads to 26 and then head back south to Chicote hollow Rd. to head to Petersburg and then back to campus via Alexandria Pike. Car safety: Along this route, there is no shoulder, so you must assert your position on the road. There are plenty of straight sections for cars to safely pass you but be cautious if you are stopped or slowly moving on curves – STAY VISIBLE. Route Description / landmarks: This is a challenging route. I recommend planning to be on the bike for at least 8 hours with breaks and all included. There is a 5-mile section currently that is more of a hiking trail than biking. This will slow you down significantly. I recommend stocking up on water in Saxton (the dollar general has cheap water). I also recommend having batteries and possibly even printed maps. Give someone you trust a copy of the map so you can call them if you are lost or stuck. Lights are important in case you get stuck in the dark. Also be sure to have enough food. About 100-200 calories an hour should be eaten. Training Tips: Try to do the hills without stopping. Continue up 17th street and make a left onto Washington St. Follow Washington St. all the way to the end of town / Route 26. Turn Left and then Right onto Water Works Ave. Turn right at the stop sign onto Locust Ave. At Route 26, turn Left. Continue past the bridge over Standing Stone Creek and make a left onto Stone Creek Ridge Rd. (There will be a sign saying Isett Heritage Museum). This begins the ~1 mile climb. There is a shoulder for the straight section of the climb, but it tends to be full of debris, so use caution. Once at the top, continue along the road until it leaves the ridge. From here there are two choices: Choice 1: Continue along the curves until you encounter Bark Ridge Rd and turn right. (It is at the power lines, the 2nd time you encounter them). Continue along Bark Ridge back to Stone Creek Ridge. There is a section of gravel, so use caution. Once on Stone Creek descend the hill. Be careful when descending, the right side of the lane has been torn up and repaved, so it is not smooth. I advise you to stay towards the middle. You can pick up a lot of speed on this hill.
